Facebook moderators at an Accenture website in Austin are dealing with a payroll catastrophe that has left many with out their vacation paychecks. Workers on the website deal with moderation, customer support, and different duties for Facebook and WhatsApp — and a work stoppage has already been threatened if the scenario just isn’t resolved.

The issues started as early as January 4th, when some staff seen errors within the system that tracks paid time without work (PTO), a clerical confusion that was attributed to a current change in payroll suppliers on the website. Things acquired extra severe when the January sixth spherical of paychecks failed to arrive. Internal pay stub techniques confirmed many paychecks as zeroed out, and staff have been left with no thought of after they may get their cash.

In an open letter to the CEOs of Facebook and Accenture, posted on an inner message board, a team of workers pledged to halt work on the website till the paychecks have been issued in full.

“If these issues are not resolved immediately a work stoppage will be enacted,” the letter promised. “The work stoppage will begin on January 7th, 2022 if nothing is resolved.”

Several lump-sum funds have been issued after the letter posted, and it’s unclear whether or not any work stoppage has occurred within the ensuing days.

In a name with workers Saturday, a managing director on the Accenture website stated he was not sure when the problem can be resolved, however the firm would cowl any late charges or overdraft prices incurred on account of the delay. “You will be paid the amounts that you are due,” he stated on the decision, “and we will get that to you as quickly as we possibly can.”

Some staff have obtained lump-sum funds from the corporate, meant to tide them over till the total quantity could be correctly calculated. But workers on the website say not everybody has obtained these funds, and lots of are in determined monetary straits.

As of Monday night time, one moderator on the Austin website stated greater than 50 folks on his staff nonetheless had not been paid. “I know many who are behind on bills, utilities, food, and rent,” he informed The Verge. “When you only get paid $16 an hour in a town like Austin, missing a check is like missing a leg.”

The problem is especially extreme due to extra time pay and bills incurred over the vacations, which have been misplaced within the shuffle between suppliers. “Some employees have had to take out payday loans just so they could have enough money to buy food for their children,” one other worker informed The Verge.

Reached for remark, Accenture consultant Stacey Jones emphasised that the corporate was working to resolve the issue. “We recently switched payroll providers and experienced some unanticipated challenges during our first payroll run with the new provider,” Jones informed The Verge. “Our number one priority since last week has been getting our people who have experienced issues paid – and, we continue encouraging our people who need assistance to reach out to their supervisor or HR, so we can help them resolve.”

Meta (mother or father firm of Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp) typically subcontracts moderation and different personnel companies to corporations like Accenture, though the association has been led to worker welfare in different cases. A 2019 Verge investigation into an Accenture website in Austin moderating YouTube movies discovered managers typically pressured workers to work via breaks and forego holidays when dealing with excessive demand.

Reached for remark, Facebook confirmed the disruption and emphasised Accenture’s efforts to deal with it. “Accenture has notified its employees of this issue,” stated Meta consultant Kadia Koroma, “and is working to resolve it as soon as possible.”
