Nexon, which develops the favored MMORPG MapleStory, desires to carry its gaming franchises to film and TV, and it’s investing almost half a billion {dollars} — and the potential for extra — to accomplish that. The company introduced Wednesday that it’s making a minority funding of $400 million in AGBO, a company based by Avengers co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo and producer Mike Larocca, and says it can invest up to a further $100 million in the primary half of this 12 months “if requested by AGBO.”

According to a press launch, “the agreement is intended to accelerate the global expansion of Nexon’s existing and new franchise intellectual property (IP) in film and television and to further support AGBO’s development, production, and ownership of tent pole-led entertainment universes appealing to worldwide audiences, including via games and Virtual World experiences.” It’s unclear in the mean time what any of that may appear like in actuality or which franchises is perhaps first to get some type of adaptation.

Nexon signaled it was critical about bringing its video games to different mediums in July when it launched a film and tv division headed up by Nick van Dyk, who led Activision Blizzard’s film and TV arm from 2014 to 2019 and labored at Disney for 10 years. van Dyk and a Nexon SVP will be a part of AGBO’s board of administrators as half of the deal, and Nexon’s funding means it can personal not less than 38 p.c of AGBO.

In current years, many sport franchises have made the bounce to films and TV reveals; Netflix has seen massive success with its The Witcher collection and the League of Legends-based present Arcane, and this 12 months, now we have Sony’s Uncharted film and the Chris Pratt-led Mario film to look ahead to. With Nexon’s enormous funding in AGBO, maybe we’ll see an adaptation of MapleStory in the longer term, too.
