Verizon Is Shutting Down Its 3G Network in 2022

Under one percent of Verizon’s users still use 3G, so it’s time to move on to greener pastures.

Shutting down Verizon's 3G network

With 5G rapidly spreading across the world, it’s time to welcome in the new and say goodbye to the old. Verizon has announced that its 3G network will shut down on December 31, 2022.

Verizon’s Surprising U-Turn on 3G

The company declared the deadline for its 3G service on the Verizon News Center. This was a surprising change of plan, as it’s only two months after the company declared that it had no immediate plans of stopping its 3G service.

However, the company has now made its mind up and set a deadline for December 31, 2022. It wanted to initiate the cutoff back in 2019 but had to delay it twice to give people time to migrate off of 3G.

The company has already made a stand by stopping new phones from entering the 3G network. Now, it has to focus on getting existing 3G customers upgraded to 4G or 5G.

Before you hope for a third delay, Verizon is determined that this deadline extension will be the last. The company has declared that the current cutoff date “will not be extended again,” so if you know anyone still using Verizon 3G, now would be a fantastic time to get them to upgrade.

If you’re struggling to imagine anyone sticking to 3G’s slow speeds, Verizon does note that its archaic network isn’t exactly buzzing with activity. Less than one percent of Verizon’s userbase use 3G on their phone, while others have moved on to 4G and 5G.

Still, those who rely on Verizon’s 3G will hopefully make the jump before December 31, 2020. In fact, it’s best to upgrade sooner rather than later, as 3G users will note their service will degrade over time and the level of support they’ll get will eventually dwindle to nothing.

A Final Decree Against 3G

While 3G has had a good run, it pales compared to 4G and 5G download speeds. If you know one of the extreme minority of Verizon users still using 3G now would be a great time to give them a 4G (or 5G!) phone for their birthday.

If you’re on the prowl for a 5G phone, there are plenty on the market for you to choose from. There’s bound to be a 5G phone that suits you best, from luxury models that do everything to budget-friendly options that help you get a foothold on the future of cellular technology.
