You Can Now Control Apple TV for Chromecast Using Google Assistant

This requires the new Chromecast with Google TV along with the Apple TV app installed on it.

The new Chromecast lets you use Google Assistant on compatible smart speakers, smart displays, and smartphones to request Apple TV+ movies and TV shows with your voice.

Works With Google Assistant

The official Apple TV app has recently launched on the new Chromecast with Google TV. A new support document on Google now acknowledges that the software supports voice commands for requesting TV shows and movies from the Apple TV+ subscription service.

As detailed by 9to5Google, the Apple TV app can be controlled from any connected smart speakers, smart displays, and smartphones that support voice commands via Google Assistant. As long as you’re signed in, you can use any of the Google Assistant devices associated with your Google account to launch playback of Apple TV+ content.

For instance, to watch the alt Space Race sci-fi show For All Mankind, you’d say something along the lines of “Hey Google, play For All Mankind on the living room Chromecast”.

Unreliable Voice Commands

On the downside, the experience of using voice commands for Apple TV+ content appears to be a mixed bag—9to5Google is complaining about the unreliability of voice input. According to the site, these commands may work perfectly fine until issues begin popping up with general controls or “even something as simple as turning the device off.”

Google will make these commands work more reliably down the road, that’s for sure. For the time being, it’s important that the Apple TV app integrates with Google Assistant from day one. If your family is mostly using Google products—and you own an Apple TV—you can now enjoy your Apple TV+ subscription without using Apple’s media streamer at all!

Aside from Apple Originals, the Apple TV lets you access your purchased or rented movies and TV shows, as well as personalized recommendations and Apple TV channels.
