Huawei Announces Mate X2 Foldable With Nearly $3,000 Price Tag

The phone is shockingly expensive, but it’s also quite impressive.

When it comes to smartphones, none are more expensive than foldable devices. Because foldable displays are such a new technology, device manufacturers are forced to charge an arm and a leg to turn a profit on the devices.

While the prices so far have been rather shocking, the new Huawei Mate X2 is by far the most expensive one we’ve seen so far, tipping the price scales at nearly $3,000, as reported by XDA Developers.

What Does the Huawei Mate X2 Bring to the Table?

The phone features a similar design to the popular Galaxy Z Fold 2. It comes with a large 8-inch foldable OLED display that splits down the middle. That screen features an impressive resolution of 2480×2200. That’s a pixel density of 413ppi, which should look absolutely gorgeous. It also comes with a 90Hz refresh rate, which isn’t quite as impressive as the latest 120Hz options, but it’s still solid.

The outer screen is a 6.45-inch OLED display with the same 90Hz refresh rate. It also comes with a high-resolution of 2700×1160 for a 456ppi pixel density. This screen could rival the display of many single-screen phones, so Huawei definitely did well in the screen department.

Powering all that screen is a HiSilicon Kirin 9000 chip, a Mali-G78 GPU, and 8GB of RAM. The phone also features 256 and 512GB of storage, depending on configuration, so at least you get plenty of space for that shocking price tag.

The cameras are pretty impressive. There’s a 50MP Ultra Vision lens with OIS serving as the primary camera. Supporting that primary shooter is a 16MP ultra-wide lens, a 12MP 3x telephoto lens, and an  8MP 10x SuperZoom camera. On the smaller front display sits a 16MP selfie camera tucked under the hole-punch.

Huawei’s Mate X2 features a large 4,500mAh battery with 55W SuperCharge fast charging technology.

Surprisingly, the device is running Huawei’s EMUI 11 OS, which is based on Android 10. With Android 12 already in the works, we’d at least expect Android 11 on the phone with such a high price. Huawei’s skin of Android is quite well-made, though, but it would be nice to see it updated to the latest version of the OS.

When Can You Get a Huawei Mate X2?

The phone will feature a price tag of CNY 17,999 (~$2,785) for the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage version. If you want to bump things up, you can drop CNY 18,999 (~$2,939) for the 8GB RAM and 512GB storage variant. It’ll come in Black, White, Crystal Blue, and Crystal Pink.

As of this writing, the device will only available in China starting February 25th. The company didn’t announce plans for an international release.
